MINT

This fast-growing perennial plant is one of the oldest herbs to be used for both culinary and medicinal purposes.

 

All the herb seeds we sell are organic, and the variety we currently stock is peppermint (Mentha piperita) - ideal for sweet and savoury dishes, teas or cocktails.

How to grow mint

Peppermint is one of the best mint varieties to grow from seed.

 

Sow seeds indoors from March to June, on a windowsill or in a well-ventilated greenhouse. 

 

Sprinkle thinly on top of free-draining compost, but don't cover the seeds with compost - they need light to germinate.

Coir (the fibre extracted from the outer husk of coconuts) is peat-free, and can be used as an alternative to traditional compost to get the seeds started. Dehydrated coir discs are what we include in our complete seed starter kits.

Put in a warm, sunny location and keep the soil moist until the seedlings emerge.

 

Coir does not contain the nutrients mint plants need to grow large. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into pots that are at least 12cm across and filled with good quality, multi-purpose potting compost. Put 2-3 seedlings into each pot.

As each clump grows larger, you can choose to either transplant it into a larger windowsill pot, or take it outside and plant it in the soil in a rich, moist, shady spot.  

Keep well watered during dry weather.

Mint is a perennial herb, meaning it should come back year after year.
